MTP and MPO cables differ in connector type and performance, as follows:
Connector Type: The MPO (Multi-Fiber Push-On) connector is a connector with at least eight fibers and complies with the IEC 61754-7 standard and the US TIA-604-5 standard. The MTP (Multi-Fiber Pull-Out) connector, manufactured by US Connector, is an improved version of the MPO connector and is fully compatible with standard MPO connectors.
Latch Clip: MTP cable connectors typically feature metal latch clips, which provide a better grip on the ferrules and reduce the risk of accidental breakage during use. MPO cable connectors, on the other hand, feature plastic latch clips, which can break the ferrules.
Floating Ferrule: MTP cable connectors feature floating ferrules that float internally, maintaining a stable connection under load and improving mechanical performance. MPO cable connectors do not have floating ferrules.
Guide Pins: MTP cable connectors utilize tightly secured, round, stainless steel guide pins to reduce debris buildup on the guide holes and ferrule end faces. MPO cable connectors use cylindrical guide pins, which may generate debris during use.
Removable Shell: MTP cable connectors feature a removable shell, allowing users to rework and polish the MT sealing gasket, easily perform performance testing, and change polarity after assembly, even in the field. MPO cable connectors generally do not have a removable shell.
Performance: MPO cable connectors are the international standard for fiber optic cabling and are suitable for 40G/100G data center cabling structures, but they may experience issues such as return loss and packet loss. MTP cable connectors are a high-performance MPO connector that help reduce insertion loss and return loss when transmitting data in high-density cabling systems.
